Together, we can rebuild trust through transparency, community collaboration, and celebrating what makes Seattle Schools extraordinary.
I’m running because Seattle deserves a district it can trust with schools and programs that support every student’s success and make our district a place where families choose to enroll and thrive.
Jen’s Vision for Seattle Public Schools
Building Trust Through Authentic Engagement
I commit to listening actively to our communities. While the school board doesn’t have the power to fulfill every request, understanding families’ concerns helps us prioritize what truly matters for student success.
Data-Driven Decision-Making
I believe in the honest assessment of both our strengths and weaknesses. By acknowledging our gaps and identifying what’s working, we can make informed decisions that benefit all students.
On the issues
-
I support thoughtful planning to strengthen programs, improve budgeting, and maintain consistency. Any closures should only be considered through meaningful partnership with affected communities, prioritizing student needs over financial calculations.
-
District data shows that 20% of students who couldn’t access their desired schools left Seattle Public Schools entirely. No child should be trapped in a learning environment that doesn’t work for them. I’ll push to enhance information about choice schools and remove arbitrary caps on their enrollment.
-
The disconnect between projected and actual enrollment leads to inappropriate staffing levels that affect classroom quality. As a part of budget oversight, I’ll push the district to develop more accurate enrollment projections that reflect reality.
-
Our elementary schools are not currently prepared or staffed to address these specialized needs of advanced learners, and dual language programs provide invaluable opportunities, particularly for heritage speakers. I’ll work toward a comprehensive plan that better serves the diverse needs within area schools.
-
While Student Outcomes Focused Governance (SOFG) was implemented with good intentions, its current application has created community frustration. The model sometimes overlooks critical factors like student safety, cultural responsiveness, class size impact, and mental health support. I’ll work to adapt adapt our governance approach to ensure we remain responsive to families while addressing reasonable community needs.
-
Selecting the right leadership is crucial. I’ll advocate for a superintendent who prioritizes transparency and accountability. We need a leader who not only values Seattle’s diverse student experiences but also works actively with staff to improve district operations, from budgeting to curriculum development.
“The district said they would provide a tool kit for well-resourced schools, but the only tool they chose to use was a jackhammer.”
